My daughter has long, thick hair. As most things are, it can be a blessing and a curse. She is 11 and takes care of her own personal hygiene but something got in her hair and she couldn't get it out. It was some sort of sticky resin, almost like sap in her hair behind her ears. It would not shampoo out.
So if you know me, you know I love coconut oil. I use coconut oil like they use Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding or like people use Frank's Red Hot sauce. I put that stuff on everything. Boo boo..coconut oil, scar..coconut oil, sunburn..coconut oil, dry skin..coconut oil, dry mouth..coconut oil...you get the point. So what did I do? You guessed it! I put coconut oil in her hair.
We melted about half a cup of coconut oil in the microwave and essentially gave her a hot oil treatment. I massaged it in her scalp and all around and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then we washed it twice with shampoo and then conditioned with regular conditioner and let it air dry. The goo was gone and it left her hair soft, fluffy and shiny without being greasy or flat. I wouldn't recommend this everyday just because it's time consuming and you'll use a ton of shampoo, especially if you have long hair. I also did a treatment with her because I had some heat damaged parts from flat ironing. Cleared them right up.
There's science behind this too. It turns out that coconut oil has medium chained fatty acids (specifically Lauric Acid) that are antimicrobial and antibacterial. These fatty acids are also absorbed by hair better than other oils making them extra beneficial and helpful in providing results in a short amount of time.
So, the next time you feel like you want soft healthy looking hair, you have a bit of damage or you just want to do something nice for yourself, try a coconut oil treatment. You'll love it!
